I think smoking should be discouraged but not banned as we should have a of choices of how we should live in our lives.

I'm so happy they banned it in AZ. I would never smoke, and I hate it when youre eating at a restaurant and somebody a table away is smoking.

LOL....There is no proof of second hand smoke. Prove it before you make claims. Its a lie to scare people away from smoking. Although smoking in general is bad for you, so are many things. Being "fat" for instance is MUCH worse than smoking. Heart disease, and many other diseases are accompanied by eating alot. Car crashes kill SO MANY people it seems almost odd. So should you stop driving? Perhaps, but it is a matter of opinion based on whether or not you consider it worth the chance of dieing. Let smokers smoke! It is their own choice afterall. Do not try to restrict the freedoms of others with your personal biases.

That was implemented here two years ago, that along with a higher tax on cigarettes is forcing many people to give up.

there are some things i really dont get about cigarettes. i get that people already addicted have a problem with trying to quit if they try, but when people start cuz they think its cool or have got hooked on someone elses smoke?

i think the government (at least in the UK) have done quite a bit to put people off smoking but alas, it still occurs.

i don't believe in cotton wooling society, because that p***es me off like crazy. like the way you cant ride in the back of pickups and aparantly every person who talks to a child is a peadophile. however, if the people who smoke don't have the right to endanger other peoples lives with their second hand smoke.

i totally agree with the bans that have been imposed because the smokers have a choice. they can either stop smoking, or just smoke elsewhere in "designated" areas. you cant ask those who dont smoke to start killing themselves just to fit in to society.

perhaps the only way forward is a total blanket ban on smoking. yeah, people wouldnt like it and they would complain. but it really is one of the highest causes of death in the world we can cull. in the past opium was legal, as was maijuana. they got banned, people complained, but life moves on.

if, after everything the government does to educate people about the harmfull effects of cigarette smoke those people still wish to. great. let them. its their choice. if they want to kill themselves puffing away on a little white stick, then yes, feel free. but don't go putting my family and my friends in danger just because they're in the vacinity.

I have no problem with smoking being in designated areas only. I just think that establisments should be able to choose for themselves whether or not they want to allow smoking or not.

And...just to let everyone know. For those of you who keep saying "when they realize how bad it is for them..". Well we know. Yeah, smoking is bad. It kills your lungs. Belive me, I'm a surgical technician, I've seen lungs of smokers first hand, I know how bad it is. I get it, it's bad for your health and I DON'T need anyone else to tell me that is is. And YES, I do still choose to smoke right now. I'm not stupid, I do know what I'm doing to myself, I have seen people suffer from smoking, my own grandfather had half a lung removed because of smoking(and still smokes by the way). I think the thing a lot of non smokers don't understand is just this..yes, it is an addiction but also alot of smokers do enjoy smoking. I like smoking now. I don't plan on smoking for the rest of my life, no, but for now it's enjoyable for me. I plan to quit by the time I'm 26 but until then I do belive I should be able to light up in the open outside without being treated like I'm the fuckin devil.

I do not think smoking should be banned everywhere. In certain places like hospitals and child care facilities it should be but other than that. It isn't harming anyone particularly. If a person dislikes smoking that much then they should be more careful where they go. Like seriously, its like telling a fat person they can't eat in public anymore =/

not at all, citing text from http://www.ash.org.uk/html/factsheets/html/fact08.html
How does this affect the passive smoker?

Some of the immediate effects of passive smoking include eye irritation, headache, cough, sore throat, dizziness and nausea. Adults with asthma can experience a significant decline in lung function when exposed, while new cases of asthma may be induced in children whose parents smoke. Short term exposure to tobacco smoke also has a measurable effect on the heart in non-smokers. Just 30 minutes exposure is enough to reduce coronary blood flow. [3]

In the longer term, passive smokers suffer an increased risk of a range of smoking-related diseases. Non-smokers who are exposed to passive smoking in the home, have a 25 per cent increased risk of heart disease and lung cancer. [4] A major review by the Government-appointed Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH) concluded that passive smoking is a cause of lung cancer and ischaemic heart disease in adult non-smokers, and a cause of respiratory disease, cot death, middle ear disease and asthmatic attacks in children. [5] A more recent review of the evidence by SCOTH found that the conclusions of its initial report still stand i.e. that there is a “causal effect of exposure to secondhand smoke on the risks of lung cancer, ischaemic heart disease and a strong link to adverse effects in children”. [6] A review of the risks of cancer from exposure to secondhand smoke by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) noted that “the evidence is sufficient to conclude that involuntary smoking is a cause of lung cancer in never smokers”. [7] A study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that previous studies of the effects of passive smoking on the risk of heart disease may have been under-estimated. The researchers found that blood cotinine levels among non-smokers were associated with a 50-60% increased risk of heart disease. [8]

is that not some evidence for you? 50-60% increase in heart disease?
so, nothing like telling obese people they cant eat in public. that doesnt harm standers by.

i have no problems with those who know the facts and still continue (either because they're addicted or because they want to) but the bans are a good thing.

Im not a smoker first of all but alot of people in the US forget one important thing. Freedom. As far as smoking in resturants I cant stand people smoking while I am eating but I also dont believe it is up to the city or the state to decide these things. I believe it should be up to the resturant owner and its employees. If someone does not like smoking in a resturant that offers it than pick a different resturant to go to. Same with smokers. If a smoker goes to a resturant that the owner has decided will be smoke free and they can not go through dinner without a smoke then they need to pick a new resturant. I believe it should be up to the business owner to decide if there is smoking in their place or not. The same goes for any business. Just like the government deciding against smoking in government buildings. they are the owner of that location so they have a choice to decide whether it is smoking or not. What happened to our freedom to choose. Is it all being taken away from us little by little? I do believe smoking is a horrible habit and is killing people all the time but I also believe if you cant handle the smoke get out of the fire dont ban it. Let the owner of the location make the decision, just like you have the right to go to that location. I probably have a harder time than most because I was a smoker and when it killled my grandfather I stopped smoking and have been smokefree for a few years now but I still crave a cigarette when I see one or smell one. I choose not to light up again though because that is my right. Im not sure how it is in other countries but I do know how it is here in the US.

    Just my 2 cents.

however, ive seen it where industry owners ban smoking at their places, and there is uproar.

the only way i feel is to get the state/government/people who run the place to impose laws on it.

    just my 2 pence :p
