Re: hey test, if you read the entire post you'd see we already cam eto that understanding, now we are debating how much mental apptitude should be included in our definition
Sport would be a activity with a set or rules, players, an objective, scoring system, penalties, guidelines, etc... Like paintball is a sport, jumping rope.... i dont think it is
but I ahve seen jumproping competitions where there is an activity set of rules players an objective scoring system penalties and guidlines
anyone who participates in a physical activity is going to try to justify their activity as a sport. i also think in order to be a sport, it must have a professional level.
A sport is something that requires physical activity and is a physical game. Thats what I think a sport is
I dissagree. As everyone elses (except perhaps golds) definitions you attempt to load a bunch of random things into it. Why must you try to complicate things? a "professional level" could be considered many things which only further complicates your definition. To define an object you only need to find a simple understanding which can be used as a base for other ideals of the specified object.
how can it be considered many things? to be a professional sport, you must get paid to play it. is that so complicated?
I dissagree. I consider a professional sport to be any sport where the players have had experience in that specific sport. This disagrement alone could raise further argument as to what the definition of sport truely means.
pro‧fes‧sion‧al /prəˈfɛʃənl/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[pruh-fesh-uh-nl] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –adjective 1. following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain: a professional builder.
That is a single definition how can you guarantee that your source is somehow correct while others are incorrect?
my source is correct because its dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/professional look at definition 5, the one pertaining to sports...
13. a person who is expert at his or her work: You can tell by her comments that this editor is a real professional. This definition from the same page does not say anything about pay. This states that anyone who is expert (aka skilled) at what they do is a professional.
in case you didnt know, the definitons descend from most common to most obscure, 1 being most common. so good job finding the fina definition on the page and trying to defend your argument 8)
Alright then here you go: 2. of, pertaining to, or connected with a profession: professional studies. Now heres the definition of profession 2. any vocation or business Now heres the definition of vocation 1. a particular occupation, business, or profession Now heres the definition of occupation 2. any activity in which a person is engaged Now, this proves that profession does not necesarily mean something which a person is payed for
a profession involves pay. if you read the definiton better in involves making a living. im not goint to respond back to this thread until you people stop arguing with merriam webster.
I think what makes a sport is fairplay, teamwork (unless it's an individual sport), and just having a great and fun time.
