I think that if you use chatspeak, I don't understand what you say =P... however, when I am in a chat of my mother language, sometimes I use abbreviations, but all of them are completely understandable^^"
I hate when someone use disproportionate chatspeak >.< It's annoying, and it seems that you aren't able to speak o_O"
However... I think that sooner or later normal languages will be supplanted by a universal web language
Most of actual languages are too knotty (like italian!) to last in the future. Remember that we live in a more and more comfortable world.

    ^^

That would be strange is everyone learned a universal language and that was used on the net. Handy though

Ahhh but then you wouldn't be able to annoy your foreign friends speaking an unknown language for them xD

I use some chatspeak like "lol, rofl, etc" but I don't go all out and "typ3 lyke dis" because for me it takes longer to type in chatspeak than it does to type legible sentences, and I like the fact that I'm easily understandible and people won't disregard what I say completely. In most places chatspeak makes you look ignorant and it makes it impossible for people to take you seriously.

it depends on what kind of chatspeak, i dont mind lol, omg, stuff like that, but if it it is so abbreviated that it is incomprehensible then thats where it crosses the line. and l33t is just plain weird.

Some times I use it. When I'm in a rush. Or trying to be funny.
Normally I think it makes the person look lazy, and stupid >,>

I really don't like chat speak, i cant read it at all.
i can deal with 'u' and using numbers like '2' instead of 'too'
but i dont like the whole "m8 wub2" (no idea what that means a friend said it to me before)

I like to say 'lol' or 'lolz' and even sometimes 'lulz'. I say it in real life sometimes too :D And Prince is allowed to use 2 and 4 and U, but no one else is allowed to, unless you are Prince.

    In your mind...
I use chatspeak when appropriate. For example, shorthand versions of long things like instead of talk to you later, TTYL. I'm fine with chatspeak unless it becomes just a long line of gibberish that you need to decipher to understand.

I think it depends a lot on the situation. Often I will type "g2g ttyl", but only because my mom has just arrived home and I have to get off of Neopets/IM quickly. I've noticed that as it gets later (i.e., 2, 3 in the morning), I am more prone to using chatspeak. This is just a sign of laziness/tiring, obviously. In general, though, I only even use it very late with my best friend, because she understands my random, unprecedented abbreviations.

"lol wut iz up w/ u 2" is a massacre of the English language, but a brb or wtf every once in a while doesn't bother me.

    Noobspeak, you mean?

It shows no signs of proper education, makes you seem noobish, and hurts my brain. =(

Personally, I think we'd do better without it. I can take a "lol" and a "brb" here and there. People use chatspeak to shorten their message.

But tell me how "lyke" is shorter and more convinent than "like", and then I'll start using it.

i dont mind the occasional 'omg' or 'lol' but when you start sustituding words like=lyk you=u you're=ur
that just plain irratates me, i think a tad bit is okay but we mostly i think its a lazy way of typing

I rarely use any chatspeak besides "lol" and sometimes "lmao" unless I am on a cell phone.
